Apidra is a rapid-acting, safe and effective diabetes medication is used by diabetics to manage high blood sugar. It is commonly used by adults and children (under the age of four years old) with diabetes mellitus.

Apidra is commonly prescribed when oral medications and diet modifications fail to correct the condition.

Apidra should be injected subcutaneously or by external insulin pumps.

  • If you are taking this medication along with TZD’s (thiazolidinediones) heart failure can occur even if you have never had any history of heart failure or cardiovascular issues in the past.
  • Do not change the type of insulin or dosage without consulting your doctor first. All changes should be made with supervision by a medical expert.
  • If you are currently using Apidra insulin, you should carry peronal identification that states you have diabetes.

Safety information when using an insulin pump with Apidra

Replace the infusion sets (tubing, catheter and reservoir) and Apidra in the reservoir every 48 hours. Select a new site for you infusion. Do not dilute or mix the Apidra insulin when used inside the pump. Hyperglycemia or ketoacidosis can result if there is a failure with the insulin pump or infusion set or degredation of the insulin in the pump. In case of failure carry an alternate form of insulin in the case.
